Communications companies in Europe and Israel have seen a steady increase in funding during the first quarter of 2004. Although the number of companies (36) being financed in Q1 is well behind the 51 deals recorded in the Software category, investors have put more money into the Communications category. The 36 companies received €212.5 million compared to 51 software companies netting €177.8 million.
The Communications category has moved up into second place now behind Biotechnology & Healthcare, securing 22% of the total funding in Q1. This is a big jump forward compared to Q4 2003, when the category received only 14.9%. Overall in 2003, companies in the Communications category ended up in third place with 103 companies receiving 15% of total funding. 199 biotech & healthcare companies secured 36% and 237 software companies netted 24.4%.
